North Dakota city remains calm as river rises
FARGO, N.D. — They passed out cigars in Fargo on Saturday, but no matches just yet, as a flood-weary city that’s spent the last week getting ready to hold back the Red River cautiously prepared to celebrate what appeared to be a successful defense against the swollen waterway.

Killdeer to New Town on Rte. 22 is about 95 miles and takes two hours if you don't stop. Starting in Killdeer, drive north on Rte. 22 to the Killdeer Battlefield State Historic Site. It was at this site in 1864 (July 28) that a battle was fought between troops commanded by General Alfred Sully and the Sioux Indians. General Sully's troops GÇô 2,200 GÇô with the aid of artillery batteries, scattered the Sioux Indian village with a reported 6,000 warriors. Sully lost only five soldiers with Sioux losses totaling between 100-150 Native Americans; there is a marker on the site.

Are you hungry for some history and a relaxing short drive? The Kathryn Road drive from Valley City to Fort Ransom State Park is a brief 42-mile trip, which is filled with history of the early settlers to the area. The starting point, Valley City, is 50 miles west of Fargo.
